Giuseppe Verdi

Libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. Based on the play by Victor Hugo.

First performed at Teatro La Fenice in Venice on 9 March 1844.

Orchestra. Conductor. Ernani, Elvira, Carlo, Silva

RCA, 1967

RCA Italiana. Thomas Schippers

Carlo Bergonzi, Leontyne Price, Mario Sereni, Ezio Flagello

Bergonzi is at his most, extraordinary singing and intelligent use of the technique. The Elvira of Leontyne Price, strong and impassioned, is superbly characterized. Sereni and Flagello, are both solid in their roles. Excellent direction of Schippers, full of energy and vitality  R

DECCA, 1987

Orchestra & Chorus of Welsh National Opera. Richard Bonynge

Luciano Pavarotti, Joan Sutherland, Leo Nucci, Paata Burchuladze

Version of vocal beauty. Pavarotti is somehow a superficial Ernani. Sutherland still shows an agile voice, even though it is a late recording in her career. It is not the best direction of Bonynge. A hint for collectors: this is the last recording together of Sutherland-Pavarotti-Bonynge.

EMI, 1982. Registro en vivo.

Coro e Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala di Milano. Riccardo Muti

Placido Domingo, Mirella Freni, Renato Bruson, Nicolai Ghiaurov

Muti, who outperforms in live compared to studio, offers a very good theatrical Ernani. Domingo is superb at his role, and Freni performs an Elvira of great expressiveness. Bruson and Ghiaurov play their roles with authority
